Allegany College of Maryland, on 311 suburban acres near central Cumberland, is a vital part of Allegany County. Known for its many high-quality allied health care and other technology-based programs, the community college transformed itself into a regional institution with an apartment complex for 236 students. ACM is also known for outstanding and well-followed athletic teams.
Other activities, such as recreation, performing arts and cultural events, make the campus a focal point of the community. The college's Gateway Center, home of hospitality programs and the student-run Culinaire Cafe, gives ACM a role in downtown revitalization and county tourism. The popular cafe is open for lunch 11:30 am - 1:30 pm Tuesday through Friday.
