Film Kickoff Look and See: A Portrait of Wendell Berry
7:00 PM

FSU Appalachian Festival â€\' Film Kickoff Look and See: A Portrait of Wendell Berry

With a Post-film Discussion by Anthony Flaccavento, Author of Building a Healthy Economy From the Bottom Up

Thursday, Sept. 14 â€\' 7 PM Frostburg’s Historic Palace Theatre

Look and See: A Portrait of Wendell Berry is a cinematic portrait of the changing landscapes and shifting values of rural America in the era of industrial agriculture, as seen through the mind’s eye of writer, farmer and activist, Wendell Berry.

The first documentary about Berry, undoubtedly one of America’s most significant living writers, Look and See was filmed in and around the rolling hills of Henry County, Ky., where Berry has lived and farmed since the mid-1960s. Filmmaker Laura Dunn skillfully weaves Berry’s poetic and prescient words with gorgeous cinematography and the testimonies of his family and neighbors, all of whom are being deeply affected by the industrial and economic changes to their agrarian way of life.

Often called “a prophet for rural America,” Berry has long been a voice for the communities that are so often overlooked by the media. Look and See subverts biopic conventions and immerses audiences into Berry’s world, providing a space for talking about the land and those who sustain it.

It’s a conversation that is more urgent now than ever, as Americans find themselves in a deeply divided nation where so many are disconnected from the farmers who feed them.

Robert Redford, Terrence Malick and Nick Offerman served as producers on Look and See, which, following its award-winning March 2016 premiere at the SXSW Film Festival, was retitled and updated to reflect the conversations that have emerged since the election.

Dunn was awarded the IFC “Truer than Fiction” Independent Spirit Award for her previous film, The Unforeseen, which was also executive produced by Redford and Malick. It premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and was broadcast on the Sundance Channel.

For a look at the film, visit http://lookandseefilm.com/trailer.

Anthony FlaccaventoAnthony Flaccavento is an organic farmer who lives near Abingdon, Va. In 1995, he founded Appalachian Sustainable Development, which has become a regional and national leader in sustainable economic development. Flaccavento founded SCALE, Inc., a private consulting business dedicated to catalyzing and supporting ecologically healthy regional economies and food systems.

Symposium: Anthony Flaccavento, Building a Healthy Economy From the Bottom Up
8:30 AM

Anthony Flaccavento is a nationally recognized sustainability thought leader with 30 years of experience studying and building innovative economic initiatives that empower everyday citizens and help solve global problems. More than 20 years as a small-scale, commercial organic farmer in southwest Virginia have helped shaped Flaccavento’s understanding of food, farming, health and economic issues, keeping him thoroughly grounded in the realities that farmers and other working folks face every day.

In his recent book, Building a Healthy Economy From the Bottom Up: Harnessing Real-World Experience for Transformative Change, Flaccavento introduces readers to the innovators who are creating thriving, locally based economies and provides a road map for others who are interested in doing the same. He demonstrates that, despite the success of local initiatives like farmers’ markets and clean energy cooperatives, true and lasting change of this type stalls without the appropriate discussion and implementation of public policies that define their lasting impact. He shows how active citizens can spur essential changes, generate community capital, increase civic dialogue and foster sustainability efforts.

Back Porch Blues is an all-star, down-home acoustic trio consisting of the incredible guitar and vocal work of Eleanor Ellis, the blues harmonica virtuosity of Jay Summerour and the percussion talents of Eric Selby. Together they deliver real-deal acoustic blues, from the Piedmont to the hills to the swamp, blues without compromise in a relaxed, fun, musical atmosphere … just like sittin’ with friends having a jam session on the back porch. Back Porch Blues has performed at various venues throughout the country, including the Greenwood Blues Cruise in South Carolina, The Music Center at Strathmore and The Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., to name a few. Check out the band at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yinzHmy8yMs.

Ellis is a native of Louisiana who began her musical career in New Orleans. Since then she has performed at clubs, festivals and concerts in the United States, Canada and Europe. Her musical influences include the blues musicians she has known personally as well as early blues greats, and she has developed her own distinctive and personal approach to the music.

Summerour has been involved with music for more than 40 years. Beginning his musical education on the trumpet at age 7, Summerour learned the harmonica from his grandfather, Smack Martin, an accomplished blues harmonica player. Largely self-taught, Summerour picked up bits and pieces from “folks he ran into” â€\' folks like Sonny Terry, James Cotton and Magic Dick. More recently, Summerour has teamed with blues artist and NEA National Heritage Fellow, Warner Williams, to perform at folk festivals, blues festivals and Smithsonian concerts under the name Little Bit a Blues.

Selby is a much sought-after producer/drummer/percussionist for many genres of music, with concentration on the blues. He has performed and recorded with many talented artists. Selby has been named Blue411’s Drum Thumper “Jimi” Award winner, has been nominated for multiple WAMMIE awards, has been inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame, has been No. 1 on Blues411’s charts multiple times and was featured in Modern Drummer for his approach and perspective in its “Drummer Blogs.”

Critton Hollow String Band

Critton Hollow String Graphic Since 1975, the Critton Hollow String Band has brought traditional American music to audiences throughout the United States, Canada, Japan, Ireland and Scotland. With fiddle, hammer dulcimer, banjo and guitar, the band tends a stable of songs from the first settlements of Appalachia to the best of contemporary American folk music. These songs express a range of experience that can make you laugh or make you cry and occasionally do both at the same time, the ballads tell stories of bad men and disappointed lovers and the instrumentals will make you want to get up and dance or sit back and listen.

The three members of the band â€\' Joe Herrmann, Sam Herrmann and Joe Fallon â€\' combine precise instrumentation, melodic interplay and three-part harmony to create a warm and engaging sound. As Mitch Podolak, the artistic director of the Winnipeg Folk Festival, commented, they have a “unique ability to make their audience feel a part of their performance.” The Critton Hollow String Band has played at numerous folk music venues, festivals and concerts, including The Birchmere Music Club, The Kennedy Center, the Philadelphia Folk Festival, the Carter Family Fold, the Vancouver Folk Festival, Clearwater’s Hudson River Revival and the Upper Potomac Dulcimer Festival. They have appeared on radio shows such as Mountain Stage, Voices From the Mountains and Live at the Birchmere, and on television shows such as Live at Meyerhoff Symphony Hall, Music From Home and the Today show. The band has seven CDs: Gather ’round (2009), The Dulcimer Collection (2000), Cowboys and Indians (1995), Great Dreams (1988), By and By (1985), Sweet Home (1983) and Poor Boy (1979).

The Church Sisters

The Church Sisters photo Originally from the coal-mining district of Dickinson County, Va., and then Danville, Va., The Church Sisters are a duo whose mesmerizing music chronicles their childhood with a haunting sound and bluegrass twist. Their roots extend through bluegrass and gospel, which they performed alongside legendary acts from a young age. The two were featured on Orthophonic Joy: The 1927 Bristol Sessions Revisited, which was co-produced by Grammy Award-winner and mentor, Carl Jackson. They also delivered with “Where We’ll Never Grow Old,” one of the tracks on the two-disc project that also features legendary artists Vince Gill, Emmylou Harris and Dolly Parton. They recently released a moving cover of Lukas Graham’s megahit “7 Years.” The song continues to see airplay at SiriusXM and comes to life in the girls’ first music video. Sarah and Savannah are currently in the studio with Grammy Award-winning producer Julian Raymond, working on their debut project for The Valory Music Co. They are also crisscrossing the United States with Delta Rae on select dates. For the latest updates, visit http://thechurchsisters.com and follow them on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. 4:00 PM

The 7th season will open on Sunday, September 17, at 4 p.m., at the Shrine of St. Peter and Paul, with “Totally Telemann,” marking the 250th anniversary of Georg Philipp Telemann’s death. Telemann was the most revered and famous composer of the first half of the 18th century. Even though Bach and Telemann were good friends (Telemann was godfather to some of Bach’s sons), Bach was always passed over for employment in favor of Telemann. This concert will feature Kathy Stewart and Sarah Lynn, two of the most prominent Baroque flute performers in the United States. Telemann’s “German Magnificat,” performed with the Scholars of St. Cecelia and soloists, will also be featured.
