Mountain Maryland has over 60,000 acres of public wild lands in which to play year-round. Your choices range from mild to wild. Quiet hikes and relaxed bike rides on the C&O Canal or the Great Allegheny Passage are great starters. Or be one of the brave ones and tackle caving, climbing or whitewater sports fun.

Don't stay inside in the winter months! Build a snowman or a snow fort. Make snow angels. Or go for a nature walk in the crisp, clean mountain air!

The Allegheny Mountain Challenge is a spectacular 73.9 or 62.1 mile bike trip itinerary, depending on how long you want to ride.

Battie Mixon Fishing Hole (canal mile 168) is located near Oldtown, Maryland. The fishing pond is well stocked with one pool reserved for children. Picnic areas are nearby and there is a lot of wildlife to enjoy as well.
This is a pleasant ride on some of the county’s back roads. Rest stops are available at Spring Gap, Flintstone, and Rocky Gap. There are some real mountain climbs, but the views are spectacular.

The Cumberland YMCA operates the Riverside Recreation Center, featuring a wide range of exercise and fitness services. The Y outdoor camping area consists of a fenced yard area with a pavilion and picnic tables.
Dan's Mountain State Park serves as a day use seasonal recreational facility that covers 481 acres and offers a wide variety of wildlife, streams, overlooks and scenic beauty. Not to be missed, Dan's Rock, the highest point in Allegany County.
