The Art of Wellness

March 15, 2018 - April 19, 2018

Allegany Arts Council

The creation of art is a healing practice. Like the human need for food, rest, and social engagement, the need for creative expression evolved with our physical bodies and the physiological systems, nervous and hormonal, that keep us healthy, or make us sick. Dysfunction of these systems leads to problems with blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, and chronic inflammatory disease, in addition to anxiety and depression. Methods to improve the function of these systems can be powerful. One hour of certain kinds of writing can bring measurable improvements in inflammatory conditions like asthma and arthritis for many months. Creating visual art produces measurable decreases in stress hormone, a trigger that causes fatigue, depression, diabetes, and clouded thinking. This class will involve practicing art while using biofeedback monitors to form an understanding of the physiological processes connecting art with our physical and emotional health. We will explore painting, clay sculpture, dance and expressive writing. You do not need to be an artist to participate. 6 Sessions, 6:00 - 7:30 pm Thursday evenings, March 15 - April 19, 2018. Location: Allegany Arts Council, 9 N Centre Street, Cumberland. To register: call ACM Continuing Ed at 301-784-5341, Course# CHE811. Registration and materials fee $35.
