She Stoops to Conquer

April 14, 2017 - April 22, 2017

A delightfully witty and satirical romp that is as promising of laughter today as it was to audiences more than 200 years ago. When city slickers Marlow and Hastings travel to the countryside in search of love, they find themselves in a tangle of pranks and mistaken identities, including the belief that their prominent host (and Marlow's possible future father-in-law), Mr. Hardcastle, is a mere innkeeper. To top it all, Marlow has a serious problem. In the company of barmaids and servant girls, he is strikingly self-assured, but in the presence of gentlewomen, including Kate Hardcastle, he is a shy and stammering schoolboy. The Hardcastle household becomes uproariously unhinged as Kate takes matters into her own hands, Hastings pursues his love and an outlandish cast of other characters burst their way into the escalating humor. Performances take place in the Drama Theatre on Friday and Saturday, April 14 and 15, and Thursday through Saturday, April 20 to 22, at 7:30 p.m., with a matinee on Saturday, April 15, at 2 p.m.
