LIVE! at StarScape: Joan Soriano

February 24, 2018

CES at Frostburg State University

The FSU Cultural Events Series presents Dominican musician Joan Soriano on Saturday, February 24 in a LIVE! at StarScape performance in the FSU Lane University Center's Alice R. Manicur Assembly Hall.

The 7:30 p.m. club-style event includes table and bar service and a menu of appetizers and desserts.Praised by National Public Radio for his "clean, feathery guitar sound," Soriano has played a major role in popularizing bachata, the African- and Spanish-based soul music sometimes called the "Dominican blues."

Born in the countryside near Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic, he fashioned his first guitar from fishing line and a discarded metal box. The Miami New Times says that Soriano "seems to embody the very history of his music." By blending Afro-Dominican sacred traditions with bachata, he infuses his music with gritty, down-to-earth spirit.

Immediately following the performance, CES joins forces with Frostburg State University's own WFWM-FM to present the Offstage Series With WFWM, when station director Chuck Dicken joins the artists onstage for a lively interactive discussion with the audience.

Prior to the performance, Soriano will present a free, public workshop in the FSU Lane University Center Atkinson Room; participants will experience first-hand the distinctive bachata dance and music style of traditional of Dominican culture. The workshop is limited to 30 participants. Prior registration is requested.

Tickets are $22 for adults and $19.80 for youth under 17. Member and group discount rates are also available. Tickets may be ordered online by visiting or by calling 1-866-849-9237 or 301-687-3137. The box office is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
