Comet Watch Star Party

March 25, 2017

FSU Planetarium

Join us for an evening under the stars to observe comet 41P/Tuttle-Giacobini-Kresak. In collaboration with the Cumberland Astronomy Club, and Frostburg Grows, we'll have telescopes set up for looking at the comet. You'll also be able to observe some nebulae, galaxies, and star clusters. Jupiter will barely be observable by the end of the star party.

There is no white light, smoking, or drinking alcohol allowed at the site where the telescopes are set up. Only red light is allowed because it is crucial for your vision to be dark adapted in order to be able to see faint objects. Red plastic will be provided at the parking lot for covering phones and flashlights. Smoke can damage the telescopes. Alcohol, even 1 drink (!), will greatly affect your ability to properly focus on an object in the telescope eyepiece given the precision required for using our telescopes.

The entrance to Frostburg Grows is located on Rt. 36, south of the intersection of I 68. The GPS coordinates are N 39 degrees 37.607 minutes, W 78 degrees 54.932 minutes. If heading south (away from Frostburg) it is on your left, just past the park & ride, where the split road joins back together. There are signs by the entrance to get your attention.

If the weather is too unfavorable for observing the comet, the star party will be cancelled. That decision will be posted by 7 pm on our Facebook page, and on the Astronomy Club website.
