Hillbilly Elegy Book Discussion at LaVale Library

September 12, 2017

Allegany County Library System

The Women's Action Coalition of Greater Allegany County will meet on Tuesday, September 12 at 5:30 p.m. at the LaVale Library to discuss "Hillbilly Elegy: a Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis" by J.D. Vance.

Vance shares the poignant story of the his family and upbringing, describing how they moved from poverty to an upwardly mobile clan that included the author, a Yale Law School graduate, while navigating the demands of middle-class life and the collective demons of the past.

The point and purpose of the book discussion group is to bring people together as a community to share something they can all find a common ground in; to discuss their views and thoughts and learn about their neighbors, and their experiences and motivations; and start to work together to become a more cohesive society and to recognize the commonalities that link us all.

"Hillbilly Elegy" is a NY Times #1 best seller, a USA Today best seller, it is being adapted into a screenplay by and to be directed by Ron Howard, and was featured in a commercial starring Oprah Winfrey.

The book discussion is the first event supported by recently formed Choose Civility, Allegany County. Home cooked refreshments will be provided!
