The University of Maryland Extension Office invites you to this one-day study of native plant fundamentals. Our lecture will explore why people need native plants, where the ecoregions of Maryland are, how to use native plant communities to guide landscape design and maintenance and how to create biodiversity-saving landscapes. This class will also include the following experimental learning activities: Mock Shopping: Can you find the quality native plants on a mock shopping table? Genetics: Using M&Ms, we will explore the differences between native plant species and their cultivars and what happens when the twain shall meet. By the end of this class, you will understand what native plants are, why they are important, and what your options are for incorporating native plants into your own landscape.
