With close to 70,000 acres of public land and over 200 miles of developed biking and…

Over 70,000 acres of public land, 200 miles of developed trail systems, an abundance of waterways, state parks, and Maryland's largest state forest - Mountain Maryland is an outdoor enthusiast's dream. Grab your bike, your kayak, your backpack, or all three, and head out into the mountains.

Mountain Maryland is home to three centuries of American history. In fact, Cumberland was the gateway to the west. Where the C&O Canal, the Western Potomac, major roads and railroads converged, the western region of America connected to the Eastern Seaboard. The very first portion of the National Road, the first federally funded highway that stretched through Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois, began construction here in 1811 and eventually became a crossroads for America.

Food Trails

Allegany County, the Mountain Side of Maryland, offers the very best hyperlocal food and drink trails. Our mountains have the fuel you need to hit the outdoors or cruise along our open roads. From a morning jolt of coffee to sweet treats, or that evening seasonal brew.
