Allegany County Tourism Announces Winners for 2022 Mountain Maryland Photo Contest
A public opening and exhibition will take place at the Allegany Arts Council in February.
January 13, 2023 - CUMBERLAND, MD - Allegany County Tourism has announced its winners for the fifth annual Mountain Maryland Photo Contest. The contest opened in May of 2022, as a way to collect photos that tell the county’s story of culture and lifestyle, giving community members and visitors the ability to submit photos in four categories - Outdoor Recreation, Scenic Landscapes, History and Heritage, and Arts and Culture. With over 350 qualifying submissions, the following stood out to judges as the top photos for each category:
Outdoor Recreation:
First Place - “Taking in the Scenic Views at Wills Mountain” by Adam Rinehart
Second Place - “Mom in the Mountains” by Lisa Wolford
Third Place - “A Rainbow Ride on the Trail” by Brooke Barnett
Scenic Landscapes:
First Place - “Pond at Glendenning Park” by Janelle Muletz
Second Place - “Point Lookout at Green Ridge State Park” by Bob Helton
Third Place - “Sunrise Panoramic over Cumberland” by Charles Foye
History and Heritage:
First Place - "Silk and Shoes from Klotz Throwing Co" by Jennifer Eddins
Second Place - "4th of July Fireworks" by Charles Foye
Third Place - "Panoramic of 1309 and a B-25 Airplane" by Charles Foye
Arts and Culture:
First Place - “Allegany County Fair" by Erin Dettinburn
Second Place - "Snowy Main Street Frostburg" by Janelle Muletz
Third Place - “Basecamp Coffee Co” by Erin Dettinburn
The winners for People’s Choice were selected by public vote on Facebook, with the top 15 photos for each category posted for review. Over 6,000 votes were cast between the 60 photos up for the awards. The following photos received the most reactions in each category, winning the People’s Choice award for that category:
Outdoor Recreation - “Skyview on the Lakeside Loop” by Zach Koelker

History and Heritage - “Polar Express Train Waiting to Depart” by Stan Navalaney
Arts and Culture - “Snowy Main Street” by Janelle Muletz
“In our fifth year doing the Mountain Maryland Photo Contest, I am still stunned by the beauty of our region captured by the photographers who submit,” says Jessica Sainz, Marketing and Sales Manager for Allegany County Tourism.
Cash prizes were awarded for the top three photos in each category, totaling $1,700. Winning photos, including the photos honored in the People’s Choice category, will be printed and displayed during the Mountain Maryland Photo Contest Public Reception and Exhibition at the Allegany Arts Council, February 4-25, 2023. A public opening will take place on Saturday, February 4, 2023, from 6-8 pm. Winning photos will also appear in the 2023 Visit Mountain Maryland Destination Guide, and all submitted photos have the potential to be featured on social media and on the Allegany County Tourism website.
