It’s been said that music makes the mountains come alive. But here, the mountains also make the music. And it’s not just the crisp mountain air that makes the music uncommonly special in this part of Western Maryland. Something about hearing the strains of a lively bluegrass number, poignant ballad or pop song infused with the deep roots and traditions of the region’s Appalachian heritage makes a live music performance here even more unforgettable. Layers of history and rich storytelling traditions have given rise to a distinct musical style that blends the past, present and future cultural elements of the area with a vibrant take on multi-genre and multi-generational influences.

Though the mountains are timeless, the inspiration and influence they continue to bring to music is forever evolving and woven into the chords and lyrics of local and regional artists while attracting artists from across the country in genres from bluegrass, folk, country and gospel to rock, pop, funk, blues, soul and jazz. Because Allegany County believes all residents and visitors should have access to live music experiences and performances, we are committed to promoting and supporting diverse musical artists and acts through live performance opportunities at cultural centers, outdoor venues, music rooms, galleries, festivals and historic sites that preserve the cultural and musical heritage of the Allegheny and Appalachian Mountain region.

From Canal Place Heritage Park and the Allegany County Fairgrounds to the Bobby Preston Amphitheater and breweries, scenic venues nestled amid the mountain highlands, rolling hills, and rural farmlands enhance the connection between nature and music. From the Gallery Stage to Frostburg State University, historic buildings repurposed as galleries, artist co-ops, wineries, restaurants and bars provide more opportunity for residents and visitors to be immersed in ambient charm.

Already home to DelFest, one of the nation’s premier roots festivals, Allegany County will continue to develop seasonal events and festivals that celebrate the rich tapestry of our mountain culture and music. And through Music Peaks we’ll serve as a resource for area musicians, bringing people together with local favorites and touring musicians from around the country and the world in magical live performances that will linger in memories for years to come.
