“Deck the Meters” began in 2020, during a holiday season overshadowed by the challenges of COVID-19. With the town’s signature Storybook Holiday event scaled back, Frostburg found a creative way to spread cheer while keeping festivities safe and outdoors. The city invited businesses, organizations, and families to adopt and decorate parking meters throughout downtown, transforming them into whimsical displays of holiday joy.
Due to the joy created, “Deck the Meters” quickly became a treasured tradition. Each year, participants craft elaborate creations that showcase holiday favorites like Santa Claus, reindeer, nativity scenes, and beloved fictional characters such as the Nutcracker, and Jack Frost. Over time, the displays have grown more elaborate, incorporating materials like garland, recycled wood, mannequins, and even hardware and building supplies to craft life-sized elves, oversized ornaments, and other dazzling designs.
Though Frostburg now offers free downtown parking year-round, the tradition continues to light up Main Street, adding an extra dose of whimsy to the holiday season.
The magic of “Deck the Meters” begins the week of Thanksgiving, when nearly 70 meters are transformed into works of art. These installations remain up through New Year’s, offering visitors plenty of time to soak in the sights.
